How is child support determined?
Child support payments are calculated by statutory guidelines. Factors that are considered include income of each parent and the amount of time each parent spends with the children. Tax issues-such as taxable income, mortgages, pretax money contributed to retirement accounts, property taxes, union dues and health insurance-are also considered. Child support is designed to equalize the relative standard of living between both households.
